How to use SRT subtitles in Movies & TV app

This week Microsoft has released a major update to Movies & TV app. According to the tweet of Ellen Kilbourne, a Windows Software Engineer focused on the Groove Music and  Microsoft Movies & TV apps, this update (version 3.6.1508.0) includes:
  • support for SRT subtitle files;
  • an improved offline experience helps you quickly find your downloaded content for offline viewing;
  • personal video folders now show thumbnails of content within the folder.

Support for the SRT subtitle files was one of the most requested features by Windows Insiders. For those of you who don't know, SRT is one of the most popular subtitle formats, so if you like watching movies, this feature is a must have for many of you.
As this is a first app release with support for this type of subtitles, it comes with a few drawbacks. Most of the media players in the market today picks up subtitles automatically or lets you to manually select required subtitles files. Sadly Movies & TV app isn't so sofisticated right now, so you have to follow few steps to make it work.
First of all, make sure SRT file has a exactly the same name as video file you'll be watching and make sure both files are in the same folder. Secondly, you must add this folder into Videos library. You can do so by clicking right mouse button on the desired folder, selecting "Include in library" and choosing "Videos". Now after opening Movies & TV app and choosing video you want to watch from the library, you'll notice "CC" button near all the player's controls. Click it and you'll be able to select subtitles track.
Looking at what most modern media players can do, this routine can be to much hassle for most users, but bear in mind this is just a first release with the SRT subtitle support, so we are expecting more user friendly way to enjoy them in the future updates. Feel free to tell us what do you think about this feature and what are you expecting in the future updates of Movies & TV app.
